Inclusive Excellence in STEM: Who's Walking the Walk?
As a part of the Broader Impacts component of an NSF proposal, I am coordinating a speaker series titled "Inclusive Excellence in STEM: Who's Walking the Walk?" The goal of the speaker series is to promote a vision of career success that includes exceptional scholarly work and impactful activism. Our speakers are well-regarded geoscientists and accomplished advocates for diversity and equity in STEM. Past speakers include Dr. Joey Nelson, Dr. Jane Willenbring, Dr. Karletta Chief and Dean Estella Atewana.

Committee on Diversity and Inclusion
I was co-lead of the NAU School of Earth and Sustainability Committee on Diversity and Inclusion between Fall 2021 and Spring 2023. Over the past couple years, the committee has taken on many initiatives to make our department more accessible and inclusive. Some of the committee's accomplishments and initiatives are listed below.
  • Gear Locker
  • Department Code of Conduct
  • Student Representative at Faculty Meetings
  • Annual Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Survey
Additional resources from the department and the committee can be found here: https://nau.edu/ses/diversity-and-inclusion/

Unlearning Racism In the Geosciences (URGE)

I participated in URGE with other members of my department. This experience was invaluable. We created many resource documents that are all on the URGE website. My URGE group went on to present our progress at AGU 2022. The resources (and a photo of our great URGE pod) can be found through this link: https://urgeoscience.org/pods/nau-ses/

Arizona Cactus-Pine Girl Scouts
I volunteered with the Arizona Cactus-Pine Girl Scouts as the scientific liaison. In addition to volunteering for general Girl Scout events, I am a resource for scouts of all ages when they pursue scientific badges and journeys. Most recently, I put together a presentation for Troop 212’s “Breathe Journey” which introduced them to air pollution and climate change. Girl Scout Journeys dive deep into a specific topic and lead to a “Take Action” project. The goal of each Journey is to better the world and foster leadership.
